Solidarity News

Food AND Medicine publishes the nationally recognized Solidarity news, which gives a voice to working families and those struggling to make ends meet in Eastern Maine. Click below to see an electronic version of our most recent newspaper.

"Solidarity News: Spring 2006".

The IAM Justice for Healthcare Workers Campaign is all about EMMC workers gaining respect and a voice on the job. Every position at EMMC, whether doctor, nurse tech, housekeeper, laundry and all the rest deserve respect and a voice on the job. All positions make our hospital run. No one can do it alone.

The Justice for Healthcare Workers campaign has the goal of supporting housekeepers, nurse techs, unit secretaries, laundry workers, transporters and others to form their own local union. This union would be of, by and for these workers at EMMC. The Justice for Healthcare Workers Campaign has the faith that a worker run organization will empower workers to help create better jobs and ultimately a better healthcare system.

The IAM takes great pride in its mission of creating democratic worker run organizations, which better the working lives of its members. The mutual support and solidarity that forms the basis of our union provides for one of life’s highest human endeavors. In Eastern Maine, the IAM has been at the forefront of supporting working family issues for all workers, not just union members. The IAM has played a key role in the revival of the Greater Bangor Area Central Labor Council together with the creation and support of the laid off worker organization, Food AND Medicine.

At Boeing, Bath Ironworks, Veterans Affair hospitals and over four thousand other workplaces across North America, the IAM has improved the quality of life for our members. Our members earn more, have greater benefits and are better protected from unfair treatment at work.

Creating and building a union is a wonderful opportunity, which presents itself to workers at EMMC. Together, we can build a better world for our hospital, patients, community and ourselves.
